Cloud Computing & Six Sigma

I am a Six Sigma BB and in my view, cloud computing can be extremely valuable when implementing Lean Six Sigma techniques and minimizing business costs as part of process management.

It is not uncommon for companies to achieve 60 percent or more in savings on variable costs in their information technology (IT) budgets by adopting the cloud. This frees up dollars which can be better spent on initiatives. And my current assignment is no exception.

Switching to cloud is a strategic business decision that will allow fixed IT costs to shift to a variable cost structure, which could provide more flexibility. Additionally, implementation of cloud computing costs significantly less and is shorter by several weeks when compared to the process for traditional outsourcing. Hardware and software are provided, routine optimization and upgrades are automated, and maintenance fees are lowered.

Lori MacVittie, of business technology news website ZDNet, recently said the move to cloud computing must be viewed as a lifestyle change rather than a fad diet.

"It's the ongoing vigilance in adhering to that diet that assures long-term success," she said.

And like CMMI, this means keeping on top of things and continuously looking for improvements.

Stay vigilant and happy coding!
